What the flags mean and hazards in the water

Every beach has a flag colour that sums up the water temperature and the weather. Before getting in, it pays to know what each colour and warning means.

Flag meanings

Green. The water is calm, conditions are good and the water is above 18 °C. Safe for swimming.

Yellow. Water 16–18 °C, or strong wind, high waves or unstable weather at the same time.

Red. Water below 16 °C, strong wind or high waves. Swimming is not advised.

Red-yellow. The area between the flags is supervised by a lifeguard.

Purple. Water pollution. With a purple flag, swimming is not advised.

Hazards on the beach and in the water
Cold water
Water temperature is 16–18 °C. Staying in the water for long is dangerous.
Water temperature is below 16 °C. The water is cold and staying in it is dangerous.
High waves
Waves caused by weather or ship traffic that can be dangerous for swimmers.
Life-threatening waves.
Strong wind
Strong or offshore wind can blow inflatables and floating gear away or drift them out to open sea.
Due to strong or offshore wind, going on the water with floating gear is life-threatening!
Thunderstorm risk
A thunderstorm is approaching the beach. Time to get out of the water and head home.
A thunderstorm is at the beach. Being in the water is forbidden — seek shelter.
Fog
Fog is coming in from the sea and may limit visibility at the beach.
Fog at the beach or on the water limits visibility. This is dangerous for anyone in the water, as the sense of direction can be lost.
Oil pollution
Oil pollution has been detected.
Algae
Algae have been detected, are being analysed or confirmed. We recommend washing yourself after swimming.
Pollution
